Juan Espinoza and Shahid Shah on the Diabetes Research Hub, Collaboration, and Revolutionizing CGM Data Accessibility – Podcast Summary
On a recent episode of the Diabetes Technology Report Podcast , Dr. David Klonoff (Sutter Health and UCSF) and Dr. David Kerr (Sutter Health) interviewed Dr. Juan Espinoza (Chief Informatics Officer at Lurie Children’s Hospital and Associate Director of the Center for Biomedical Informatics and Data Science at Northwestern University, and Scientific Director of the DRH) and Shahid Shah (CEO of Netspective Communications and Technical Director of the DRH) about the Diabetes Research Hub (DRH), Collaboration, and Revolutionizing CGM Data Accessibility.
Here are some highlights from Shahid:
- In the process of developing the DRH, we are asking researchers what they actually need and want to support their evidence-driven research and data collection. This will enable researchers to more easily drive toward cures and treatments.
- The DRH is a place for researchers to “call their own”.
- Already, researchers are able to use the DRH to upload and use data, both their own and that of other researchers.
Here are some highlights from Juan:
- CGM can be seen as a new type of data source to inform ANY type of scientific work.
- However, there are major gaps in how to access, acquire, clean, normalize, analyze, store, and share this new type of data. For instance, metrics and methods for CGM analysis are not well understood and disseminated across the scientific research community, which represents a barrier for investigators.
- The main problem we are solving is how do we “de-mystify” CGM data for researchers
- The DRH aims to build tools for research AND a community of research.
- The DRH aims to improve equity in the space both by reducing barriers to entry in CGM research and allowing researchers to study questions that are specific to smaller subsets of the population.
In summary, the DRH is an evidence-based platform that aims to make researchers lives’ easier, so that they are able to develop better evidence-based treatments for and knowledge on diabetes.
